Orthopaedic Surgery Rotation Syllabus
ORTHOPAEDICS – Course Code 646 (TUH)
The rotation in Orthopaedic Surgery at Temple University Hospital can serve as an Orthopaedic audition rotation and is also a part of the Surgical Subspecialties block for 4th-year medical students. Students will rotate through the different Orthopaedic services during their time (Sports Medicine, Trauma, Joint Reconstruction, and Hand Surgery). Attendance on daily morning rounds is expected followed by morning teaching conference. Following conference, students will either assist in surgical cases in the operating room or see patients in orthopaedic clinic. Emergency care of orthopaedic injuries will also be emphasized.
Learning objectives:
- To develop an understanding of common orthopaedic disorders and injuries with regard to examination, diagnosis, and management principles.
- To gain skills assisting in the treatment of orthopaedic patients in the operating room, floors, emergency department, and clinics.
- To understand the team approach to clinical orthopaedic patient care.
Required reading:
"Textbook of disorders and injuries of the musculoskeletal system, 3rd Edition, 1999”
by Robert B. Salter.
Course evaluation:
Grading for the rotation will be made based on clinical performance and a written examination to be administered at the end of the rotation from the required reading.
